How to choose a brand designer in Wollongong and the Illawarra
What to look for, what to ask and how to tell whether a designer is the right fit, from a brand and website studio on the Coal Coast.

The short answer
Choose a brand designer whose past work solves problems like yours, who explains their thinking in plain language and who gives you a clear, fixed scope before you commit. Being local helps with workshops and shoots, but fit, experience and process matter more than postcode.
Freelancer, studio or agency?
| Option | How it usually works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | One designer, often with a lower day rate. Quality and availability vary a lot. | Smaller jobs, a logo refresh or one-off designs |
| Senior-led studio | A small team or a senior designer who does the work and brings in specialists as needed. | A full identity or website where you want experience without agency layers |
| Agency | Account managers, strategists and designers, often with broader marketing services. | Large campaigns and businesses needing many services at once |
None of these is better by default. The useful question is who will actually do the design work, and how much experience they have.
What to look for
- Relevant work. Not necessarily your industry, but problems like yours: a rebrand, a multi-brand system, a business moving upmarket.
- Thinking, not just pictures. Good case studies explain the challenge, the idea and the result.
- A clear process. You should know the stages, when you’ll see work and how feedback works.
- A fixed scope and price. A written proposal with deliverables, timing and payment milestones.
- Ownership. Confirm you’ll own the final files once the project is paid.
- Range. If you’ll need a website, photography or motion next, it helps when the same person can carry the brand through.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Who will design my brand, and who will I deal with day to day?
- What’s included, and what’s quoted separately?
- How many concepts and rounds of changes are included?
- How long will it take, and what do you need from me?
- Will I own the final files and guidelines?
- Can you also design the website, or work with whoever does?
Does it matter if they’re local?
It helps more than people expect. Meeting in person for a workshop, seeing your space and shooting photos or video on site all make for a better brand. A designer who knows Wollongong, the northern suburbs and the South Coast will also understand who your customers are.
That said, plenty of good brand projects run entirely over video calls. If a designer outside the region is the better fit, choose them.
Working with DD Design
DD Design is a senior-led brand and website studio in Clifton on the NSW Coal Coast, just north of Wollongong. I’m Drew Kilpatrick, and I’ve got almost two decades of experience across agencies and direct client work. I design every project myself and come to you for workshops and shoots around the Illawarra and Sydney.
Most brand identity projects take 8 to 12 weeks and cost $10k to $30k+ (plus GST), quoted as a fixed fee. See what’s included in a brand identity, how projects run on the Approach page, or browse recent projects.
